Risks and Complications of

Non-Surgical Cosmetic Procedures

All non-surgical cosmetic procedures carry potential risks and side effects.

These may vary depending on the treatment, the products used, and the individual. It’s important to have a full consultation with a registered health practitioner prior to undergoing any procedure to understand the risks, potential outcomes, and aftercare requirements.

The following is a general guide to possible risks and complications associated with higher-risk non-surgical cosmetic procedures:

Swelling and Bruising

Swelling and bruising are common side effects following procedures such as dermal fillers or anti-wrinkle injections. These symptoms are usually temporary and resolve within a few days, though in some cases they may persist longer.

Redness and Irritation

You may experience localised redness, tenderness, or irritation at the treatment site. This typically subsides within a few hours to days after the procedure.

Pain or Discomfort

Mild to moderate discomfort at the injection or treatment site is common. Your practitioner will discuss appropriate pain relief and aftercare.

Infection

There is a small risk of infection any time the skin barrier is compromised. Strict hygiene protocols are followed to minimise this risk, and you will receive instructions on how to care for the area post-procedure. Please report any signs of infection such as increasing redness, heat, swelling, pain, or discharge.

Allergic Reactions

Although rare, some individuals may experience an allergic or hypersensitivity reaction to ingredients used in non-surgical procedures. Ensure you inform your practitioner of any known allergies or medical history.

Asymmetry or Irregular Results

Results may vary between individuals. There is a possibility of asymmetry, over-correction, under-correction or lumpiness, particularly with injectable treatments. In some cases, further treatment may be required.

Results shown in any materials or discussed during consultation are based on individual cases. Outcomes may vary depending on personal anatomy, product used, and treatment goals.

Vascular Complications (Injectables)

Injectable treatments can, in rare cases, lead to vascular occlusion, where a blood vessel becomes blocked. This is a serious complication and may require immediate treatment. Symptoms may include severe pain, changes in skin colour, or skin breakdown. Always seek immediate medical advice if concerned.

Skin Damage or Scarring

Non-surgical procedures can sometimes cause changes in skin texture or scarring. This is rare and often linked to post-treatment infection or improper aftercare.

Pigment Changes (e.g. after laser or chemical peels)

Changes in skin pigmentation may occur, particularly in individuals with darker skin tones. This can include both hyperpigmentation (darkening) and hypopigmentation (lightening) of the skin. These changes are usually temporary but can be permanent in rare cases.

Delayed Onset Nodules (Injectables)

With certain injectable products, delayed inflammatory nodules may form weeks or months post-treatment. These may require further management, including medication or specialist review.

Psychological Impact

It is important to have realistic expectations of the outcomes. Cosmetic procedures should not be used as a solution for low self-esteem or psychological conditions. Please discuss any concerns with your practitioner.

Important Considerations

  • Individual Results May Vary – The results of non-surgical cosmetic procedures depend on individual anatomy, treatment goals, and response to the procedure.

  • Informed Consent is Essential – Your practitioner will explain the procedure, risks, potential complications, and expected outcomes prior to any treatment.

  • Aftercare Instructions Must Be Followed – Following the advice provided by your practitioner helps reduce the risk of complications and supports proper healing.

Reporting Adverse Effects

If you experience any unexpected reactions or complications, please contact your treating practitioner immediately. If urgent, seek medical attention.
